Downtown Whitefish
Ah, Whitefish. Once a frontier logging and trapping outpost, the town boomed when the Great Northern Railway decided to bring their main East-West line (still a great way to get here from Seattle, Portland, Minneapolis, and points between) through in 1904. In 1933, Glacier National Park's Going-to-the-Sun Road opened to car traffic, making summer tourism an important part of Whitefish's economy. In the mid-1940s, inspired by Sun Valley and the ski resorts of Europe, local businessmen decided to build a ski resort of their very own and did, opening the first lift on December 14, 1947.
Today, Whitefish's long history and popularity as a tourist destination combine to create something unique: a real Montana town, complete with multi-generation local families and a friendly, small-town vibe, that also boasts world-class restaurants, vibrant night-life, eclectic shopping, two separate local theater companies and more.
More than the amazing snow that stays soft for days, more than the pleasant lack of lift lines, and more than the incredible variety of terrain available at the top of a single 7-1/2 minute lift ride, the town of Whitefish is what makes Whitefish Mountain Resort the absolute best choice for your next ski vacation.
